Lisbon's tourist tax in 2026: four euros a night, capped at seven

If you are staying in Lisbon, there is a municipal charge that does not appear in most booking prices and is collected at the accommodation itself.
The numbers
The tax is 4 euros per guest per night, for a maximum of seven nights. The most any one guest pays for a single stay is therefore 28 euros. It doubled from 2 euros in September 2024 and has stayed at 4 euros since.
It applies per person, not per room, so a couple staying five nights pays 40 euros between them.
Who does not pay
Children under 13 are exempt. So are guests with a recognised disability or incapacity of 60 percent or more, with valid supporting documentation, and people staying for medical treatment together with one accompanying person.
Where it appears
The charge is collected by the hotel or the licensed short-term rental where you stay, usually on arrival or at checkout. Booking platforms often show the room price without it, which is why the final bill can surprise people. It is not an extra charged by the property — it goes to the municipality.
Worth knowing
Lisbon is not unique here; several Portuguese municipalities levy their own tourist tax, at different rates and with different caps. The rate and the exemptions are set by each câmara municipal and can change from year to year.
